Kingolwira Estates and Ubena Estates are among the sisal estates, which were under Tanzania Sisal Authority prior to privatization in 1998. In year 2000 the farm was placed under lease agreement with Highland Estates Ltd for seven years.
Engagement with the Government through Parastatal Sector Reform Commission (PSRC) to sell the farms to Highland Estates Ltd were successful and they sold the farms to Highland Estates Ltd.

Highland Estates Limited had envisioned way back in the year 1990 that investment in Sisal plantations was judicious as the international market beckoned the growth of the industry; seeing the opportunity coming from Tanzania Sisal Authority, they applied for 7 years lease for Ubena and Pangawe Estate.
The annual production of Sisal Fibre for the above Estates is estimated at 2,500 Tons
The Company’s potential costumer is its own sister company based in South Africa which imports over 50% of the annual production for its Carpet manufacturing Industry. The manufactured carpets are being exported to Europe. The remaining 40% is being exported to the Gulf Countries and to West Africa. About 10% of Sisal Fibre is sold in the local Market.
